In 2016, Janie Marlow, SCNPS Upstate member, leader, and creator of namethatplant.net, had a great idea for a new way to educate people about the beauty and diversity of the native and wild plants in our ecosystem.
She remembers thinking, “The Swamp Rabbit Trail is used by such a wide demographic: old/young/walkers/cyclists/babystrollers/unicyclists/residents/visitors. And so many people do have at least a casual interest in the plants they see but have no clue as to what they are or how to find out more about them. A reference guide to the native and wild plants along the trail seemed like such a great opportunity.”
And true to her nature, Janie took a complex, high-impact idea and brought it to life!
With the help of her husband, Steve Marlow, who created the trail map for the brochure, she concepted and designed “Wild Plants on the Rabbit,” a brochure produced by SCNPS.
Filled with photos and facts, the pocket-sized brochure is handy way to acquaint people with plants that have been growing in our region since before the time of Columbus, and, for many of the native plants, over thousands of years ago.
“Wild Plants on the Rabbit” also identifies two other groups of plants: 1) naturalized plants, not native to our area but now growing in the wild, and 2) invasive plants that are naturalized and disrupting native plant communities.
Now, 10 years later, this popular reference brochure is in its third edition. The trail has grown from 20 miles to 28 and now is used by over two million people annually.

• New designations of Swamp Rabbit Trail segments are added on the map: Green Line, Blue Line, Orange Line with mile markers on the new leg of the Green Line.
• New landmarks such as Unity Park are added to the map.
• “Exotic” species are now referred to as “introduced” species.
• Some plant descriptions and photos are added/updated.
