The Upstate Chapter of the SCNPS is delighted to welcome two new Board members! Barbara (Barb) Key will take on the role of Treasurer, and Ian Portwood will serve as our new Membership Chair. We’re excited to have them join the team and look forward to the passion and expertise they bring.

A Heartfelt Thanks

Before introducing Barb and Ian, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Phillip Adams, our outgoing Treasurer, and Lauren Winter, our outgoing Membership Chair. Phillip’s meticulous oversight and Lauren’s dedication to fostering a vibrant membership have been invaluable to the Upstate Chapter. We deeply appreciate their service and look forward to their future contributions to SCNPS in new and meaningful ways.

Barbara Key

Barbara (Barb) Key will soon transition into the role of Treasurer, with plans for the handoff to be complete by January. Barb brings a wealth of experience, having spent 45 years in quality assurance for the automotive, weigh scale, and aerospace industries.

A long-time South Carolina resident, Barb and her husband, Ron, raised their two daughters, Katie and Lacey, here. At home, their three “fur babies” keep them company. In her free time, Barb enjoys hiking and camping, where she finds refreshment and inspiration in nature.

Barb joined SCNPS to learn more about the native plants and wildflowers she encountered on her hikes. Having recently retired, she’s eager to devote her time and skills to supporting the mission of the Upstate Chapter.

Ian Portwood

Ian Portwood has joined as the new Membership Chair for the Upstate Chapter. Ian is a risk consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) who moved to South Carolina from Florida four years ago, drawn by a desire to immerse himself in a more nature-focused lifestyle.

When he’s not working, Ian loves hiking and camping with his wife and their two-year-old daughter, exploring the natural beauty of the Upstate. While their cat prefers the comfort of indoor pursuits, Ian’s family is often outside enjoying the region’s scenic landscapes.

Ian was initially attracted to SCNPS by its focus on nature and learning. Now, as Membership Chair, he’s excited to connect with members and grow the community of native plant enthusiasts. “I’m excited about helping out however I can!”

Please join us in thanking Phillip and Lauren for their service and welcoming Barb and Ian as they begin their new roles!
