SCNPS and its partners, Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC) and Friends of the Reedy River (FoRR), are actively monitoring several critical environmental and conservation issues that impact South Carolina’s natural beauty and ecological health. We believe it’s essential for our members and the broader community to be aware of these matters and take part in these advocacy efforts. By becoming informed, spreading the word, and taking action, you can help drive meaningful change. Here are the key issues we’re focusing on:

  1. Energy Legislation and Fossil Fuel Dependency
  • Issue: House Bill H.5118 proposes a long-term commitment to fossil fuels, which could lock South Carolina into outdated energy sources for the next 50 years, hindering progress on climate goals.
  • Action: Contact your state representative to oppose H.5118 and support clean energy alternatives.
  • Action: Submit comments to the Public Service Commission (PSC) opposing this project.
  • More Info: Read more about H.5118

2.Supporting the Alternative Fuels Tax Credit Bill

  • Issue: This bill incentivizes the use of alternative fuels, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote cleaner energy.
  • Action: Encourage your legislators to support the Alternative Fuels Tax Credit Bill.
  • More Info: Learn more about the bill
  1. SC+EV Initiative and Electric Vehicle Infrastructure
  • Issue: The SC Department of Transportation is developing an electric vehicle (EV) charging network across the state, supported by National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding.
  • Action: Attend Public Open Houses to provide input and support the expansion of EV infrastructure.
  • More Info: Find a meeting near you
  1. Support for Local Land and Rosenwald Schools
  • Issue: Protecting historical sites like the Rosenwald Schools and supporting local land conservation initiatives are critical for preserving South Carolina’s heritage and natural resources.
  • Action: Advocate for H.4996 to support transferable development rights and local land protection.
  • More Info: Learn more about the Rosenwald Schools
  1. Criminalizing Tire Dumping
  • Issue: Tire dumping is an ongoing environmental problem, causing pollution in rivers and natural areas.
  • Action: Urge SC Senators to support S.1020, which aims to formally criminalize tire dumping.
  • More Info: Learn more about S.1020
  1. Fig Buttercup Eradication
