Exploring and Celebrating Native Plants at the Pickens County Native Plant Jubilee

Come out on Saturday, May 4, 2024, to the inaugural Pickens County Native Plant Jubilee, a celebration packed with expert talks, plant sales, and educational booths dedicated to native plants and their ecosystems. Held at 225 Ponderosa Drive, Six Mile, SC 29682, the event promises to engage plant lovers and conservationists with a blend of learning and leisure activities.

 

Event Schedule and Activities

Gates Open at 9:00 AM – Start the day early by exploring a variety of vendor booths offering native plants for sale, perfect for enthusiasts looking to expand their gardens or start new projects. The vendor area will remain open throughout the event, allowing guests to shop and learn at their leisure.

 

10:00 AM: Plants of The Blue Ridge Escarpment and the Jocassee Gorges – Dennis Chastain, a respected naturalist and historian, will discuss the unique flora of the Blue Ridge Escarpment and the Jocassee Gorges. This session will provide invaluable insights into the local biodiversity and the importance of preserving these native habitats.

 

10:45 AM: Pollinators and Invasive Plants – Landscape architect, naturalist and SCNPS Advocate-in-Chief Rick Huffman will explore the vital roles of pollinators and the threat posed by invasive plants. This talk is crucial for anyone interested in ecological gardening and the preservation of local ecosystems.

 

11:30 AM: Beyond the Bloom: Native Perennials for Form & Function – Jon Fritz from Bluestem Landscape Design will share his expertise on using native perennials to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of gardens. This session is perfect for attendees looking to create landscapes that are beautiful year-round and supportive of local wildlife.

 

12:15 PM: Native Plants and Wildlife – Dr. Jon Storm, Assistant Professor of Biology at USC Upstate and a dedicated member and volunteer of SCNPS, will share his insights on the symbiotic relationships between native plants and local wildlife. This presentation will offer practical advice for fostering biodiversity in your own backyard.

 

Additional Amenities and Information

Food and Refreshments: A selection of food trucks will be available, offering a variety of dining options to enjoy amidst the activities.

Interactive Info Tables: Ongoing throughout the day, these tables will provide additional information, allowing visitors to learn at their own pace about specific native species, conservation techniques, and more.

Networking Opportunities: Meet with experts, local gardeners, and conservationists to share knowledge and discuss initiatives.
