We need YOU to help shape the future of Greenville County!

On November 5th, the Greenville County Council is holding a public hearing on the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST at  Council Chambers – County Square, 301 University Ridge, Greenville, SC 29601.  It’s been a long time coming, and this is our chance to stand up for the natural beauty and sustainable growth of Greenville. Your voice could be the one that makes all the difference!

As Aldo Leopold wisely said:

“We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”

This hearing is our opportunity to show that land is not just a resource to be used, but a community we all belong to. The UDO promotes responsible growth while preserving Greenville’s trees, green spaces, and waterways for future generations.

Why the UDO matters:

Protecting trees and green spaces: The UDO strengthens protections for tree canopy and riparian buffers, incentivizing the preservation of large trees and safeguarding our forests.

Clean water and responsible development: It introduces stricter standards for septic developments and encourages growth in areas with existing sewer systems, protecting our waterways.

More meaningful access to green space: By promoting the preservation of green spaces in new developments, the UDO creates intentional outdoor areas for residents to enjoy.

Sustainable growth and housing: It expands housing options in urbanized areas, balancing affordable living with efforts to limit intense development in rural regions.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Speak at the hearing: If you’re able to make it, we’d love for you to join us! Please email Rick Huffman at rick_huffman@earthdesignsc.com to confirm. Your perspective as an advocate for native plants and natural habitats is powerful and can make a real difference.
