Upstate Chapter Field Trip to Roan Mountain

Join the South Carolina Native Plant Society for a day field trip to the Highlands of Roan Mountain, straddling the Tennessee/North Carolina border. The grassy balds of Round Top are home to a unique ecosystem featuring Catawba rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense), flame azaleas (Rhododendron calendulaceum), and the rare Gray’s lily (Lilium grayi)—a stunning sight for plant lovers.

  • Location: Carver’s Gap Trailhead Parking Lot, NC 261
  • Difficulty: Moderate – some uneven terrain and elevation changes
  • Limit: 15 attendees

What to Expect:

This guided field trip will take you through one of the most iconic natural landscapes in the region. Roan Mountain’s highlands offer breathtaking mountain views and an incredible diversity of native plant species. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the botanical wonders of the grassy balds and witness a stunning display of seasonal blooms.

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy footwear for uneven terrain.
  • Lunch and plenty of water.
  • Sunscreen, hat, and layers for changing weather.
  • Binoculars for a closer look at the plant life.

Directions:
Plan to meet the group at Carver’s Gap Trailhead Parking Lot on NC 261 at 10:00 AM. From Greenville, the drive is approximately 125 miles and takes about 2.5 hours.
