Come celebrate America’s largest native fruit at the 2025 SC Pawpaw Festival! Hosted by Blue Oak Horticulture — a local farm that grows native and edible plants and values educating the public about the importance of native plants — this annual festival is a fun way to bring people together to celebrate and learn about this unique native plant.
What is a pawpaw?
Asimina triloba is a tree native to the Eastern United States that often grows in forest understories. The large, yellow fruit is sweet and can be eaten raw or incorporated into desserts.
What can I expect at the festival?
Expect an afternoon packed with pawpaw-themed fun! Last year, the festival boasted over 650 attendees.
The festivities include:
-
Pawpaw fruit tastings
-
Native plant sales
-
Live bluegrass music
-
Local food trucks, including vendors selling pawpaw-themed foods!
-
Pawpaw ice cream
-
Native plant walks led by plant experts
-
Artisans and vendors
-
Self-guided Blue Oak Horticulture farm and greenhouse tours
More information can be found at Blue Oak Horticulture’s event page.
Volunteers needed!
We are looking for SCNPS members to assist with the pawpaw fruit tastings and seed preservation. Once attendees sample the fruit, they’re encouraged to take seeds home to grow their own pawpaw trees. Volunteers will educate attendees on how to clean seeds and prepare them for planting. And of course, this is a great opportunity to promote SCNPS! At least three volunteers are needed from 2:30–8pm. Training will be provided.
