We were saddened to learn of the passing of Sherrie Whitten, a longtime member of the SCNPS Upstate Chapter, wife of SCNPS State President Dan Whitten, and a beloved part of our community.

Sherrie was a steady, cheerful presence at our plant sales for many years, often working as a cashier and offering helpful ideas to shoppers. She supported our chapter in countless ways, and many remember her as someone who made everyone feel welcome.

Fellow member Judy Seeley recalled, “Sherrie was always ready with a smile and had a gracious way of making everyone feel included. She was husband Dan’s sidekick and cheerleader as Dan took on official leadership roles in our chapter and at the state level.”

Rick Huffman shared similar sentiments: “Sherrie Whitten was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her abounding spirit and love for nature set an example for all of us! We miss her!”

In addition to her work with SCNPS, Sherrie helped found Friends of Jocassee, reflecting her deep commitment to environmental conservation across South Carolina. Her warmth, dedication, and generous spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

She is deeply missed.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

by Robert Frost

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
