Lecture: Lowcountry Land Trust Center for Conservation: A Native Plant Success Story!

Since 1986, Lowcountry Land Trust has served as a partner and resource to South Carolina landowners to create a lasting, positive impact. They hold perpetual conservation easements on over 163,000 acres of land across 17 coastal counties.  This summer, Lowcountry Land Trust officially opened the Lowcountry Center for Conservation, their new permanent headquarters on Old Towne Road West Ashley.

Erin Stevens is a landscape architect with a devotion to the native plants that provide tangible connections between human communities and their unique ecological contexts. She has been heavily involved with establishing and sustaining the Nature-Based Exchange – an organization committed to bringing native plants to the fore as ecosystem engineers and critical components in rising to the challenges of our changing landscape. As the founder of Surculus, her designs have been beacons of hope for promoting the presence of native plants as both beneficial and beautiful in the designed and built landscape.

Enter Duckett Hall from Jones Ave and go up the short steps to the Auditorium on your left. Free parking is available after 5:00 PM in the parking lot south of Richardson Street, accessible from Mims Ave.  Refreshments and socializing after the meeting.

Field Trip: Tour of the Lowcountry Land Trust Center for Conservation

The Lowcountry Land Trust does critical work for the region, preserving precious pieces of property for generations to come, and they have just opened their new Center for Conservation, a gorgeous building made of reclaimed brick and wood, all surrounded by a landscape designed by THE Erin Stevens of Surculus — a landscape design firm that specializes in native plants and resilient landscapes for the lowcountry.

Join us Saturday, November 22 for a tour of the grounds, located adjacent to Charles Towne Landing. Erin will share with us her beautiful native plant palette that she chose to highlight for this important gathering place, with insight into the design considerations of the space, including its hydrology. After the tour of the gardens and a glimpse into the fantastic Center for Conservation building itself, which is worth its own separate field trip someday, we will have a chance to explore the fringes of the property with weed wrenches in hand! Sadly, the edges are peppered in privet, which fortunately we are prepared to remove. Registration opens 2 weeks before the event at this link.

Hospitality Chair Needed

We have an open Lowcountry volunteer board position for Hospitality Chair.  Any SCNPS member in good standing can apply.  Duties include:

  • Contact food vendors in advance of monthly meetings to order refreshments.
  • Set up food at meetings and provide eco-friendly cutlery, plates, cups.
  • Support special events as needed, such as holiday parties, plant sales, and symposiums.
  • Monitor lowcountry.hospitality@scnps.org email address.
  • Attend monthly meetings and Lowcountry board meetings.
