Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 15, 2024, as SCNPS is heading to the Highlands of Roan Mountain, perched on the Tennessee/North Carolina border, for an unforgettable field trip.

Roan Mountain’s highland ecosystem, along with the grassy balds of Round Top, form a captivating landscape brimming with distinctive flora. The vibrant Catawba rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) blooms, stunning flame azaleas (Rhododendron calendulaceum), and Grey’s lily (lilium grayi) will leave plant lovers in awe. This alpine getaway promises to be a treasure trove of botanical marvels that are sure to inspire and delight.

  • Where: Meet the group at Carver’s Gap trailhead parking lot on NC 261 at 10 a.m.
  • Distance from Greenville: Approximately 125 miles
  • Driving Time: About 2.5 hours
