Yarrow question from Ken in SC

Posted on |

I have found a patch of what I believe is Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium). I am a little confused however because I picked and crushed a few leaves, and did not get the pungent odor I was expecting. Is that because it is later winter, and spring growth has not started yet? Perhaps because of growing conditions (moist semi-shaded lawn)? Or have I misidentified my plants? Thank you!

Hi Ken,

this certainly looks like yarrow to me also. I don’t know why it does not have the characteristic odor. The aroma may develop better if the leaves are dried. There are a few plants with similar leaves, but I do think yours is yarrow. To be 100% certain you should wait for the flowers.  Try this site for a few more hints: https://practicalselfreliance.com/yarrow-achillea-millefolium/
