Taro from Lewis in SC

Expanding range along a creek. Not deeply rooted. If it’s native I don’t mind, but I don’t think it is.

Lewis,

this is one of the Elephant ear plants, and its scientific name is Colocasia esculenta.  It is in the Araceae.  Some varieties are regularly eaten, and other names include taro and poi.  I have seen it escaping on the coastal plain of NC along swampy streams; it is not a native plant, but it is decorative.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, botanist, SCNPS
