Mock strawberry from William in SC

Posted on |

What is it? Is it a round strawberry plant and is it edible? It is growing on the east side of my house near the foundation. The soil appears to be clay like and its damp.

Hi William,

it is edible, but it is not a true strawberry – it is called Indian strawberry or mock [false] strawberry, Duchesnea indica. It is not a native plant, and can be invasive.  However, as mentioned, the fruit is edible, but essentially tasteless.
