Lycopus virginicus from Diane P., SC

Posted on |

Hi, Dr. Hill,
Another pond-side plant from the Fall Line. It grows in full sun, mostly clay soil, and was photographed on Sept. 21. It’s not showy at all and the mature flowers are those in the cover photo. I hope you can tell me what this is.
Diane

Hi Diane,

your plant is a type of mint called water horehound, Lycopus virginicus.  It is rather widespread and often found at pond margins.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D.,  botanist, SCNPS
