Facelis retusa from Vickey in South Carolina

Posted on |

This little plant/weed is very small. Maybe 4 inches at a taller stem. It has shiny tiny leaves all bunched on the stem with its seed heads. Growing in my yard in sandy mostly dry soil. May is when I noticed it’s fluffy fuzzy seed heads. I can’t find anything in my web search about it. Please tell me what it is. Thank you!

Hi Vickey,

your plant is called Annual trampweed, Facelis retusa. It is not native, but is commonly found in yards and roadsides in the Spring. Thank you for the additional pictures, they were very helpful.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
