Evening primrose from Diane, SC

Posted on |

Hi, Dr. Hill,
This plant has recently come into flower in roadside ditches in the SC fall line countryside. It was growing in full sun. The plants I came across on August 18 when these photos were taken reached 4-ft. high or a little taller. I’ve attached photos of a leaf, front and back view, and one showing more of the leaf arrangement, as well. Thank you.

Hi Diane,

this is the common evening primrose, Oenothera biennis, in the family Onagraceae.  It has many uses, which you can find on Google.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
