I saw this at the ANMed Lake in Anderson, SC. It looks like a Yellowspine Thistle but I didn’t think they were in SC. What do you think?
Hi Joe,
this is sometimes called yellow thistle, but not when it has reddish flowers. It can have either. It is Cirsium horridulum, a rather common thistle in open sunny areas, especially roadsides, and it is native.
I apologize for the delay in my reply. I had software issues that only now have been fixed. Thank you for your patience.
Sincerely,
Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
