Chevreulia acuminata from Katie in SC

Growing on north side of house in shade and part sun on 5.4 pH soil. Thought it was a moss due to looks and very low growth close to ground, never up right but on it’s side. Moss professional said it is  not a moss. Started out as a small spot but has taken over backyard growing in between St Augustine grass.

Hi Katie,

this was a hard one!  I sent it to another expert who told me the following:

Keith Bradley

Chevreulia acuminata. Just documented here 2 years ago but it is frequent in the low country and also up in Landrum
It is newly introduced, in the composite family. Few have seen it yet.
Thank you!  Great picture!
Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, botanist, SCNPS
