Cardinal flower from Johnny, South Carolina

Plant was found on a western slope in a shaded wooded area. The plant was located near a pond in what looked to be a well drained are. The plant was located behind USCS in Spartanburg South Carolina. The photo was taken on 9/8/2013 at about 4 pm.

Hi Johnny,

your brilliant red flower is the Cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis.  I suspect it is  favorite of hummingbirds.  They can be cultivated, but they need a lot of moisture.
