Bidens bipinnata from Richard in South Carolina

Posted on |

Growing in shade under hickory and walnut trees. Has a semiwoody green stem with parsley like leaves. Seems to be over 1 foot tall right now.

Hi Richard,

this appears to be a young plant of Bidens bipinnata, known generally as Spanish Needles. The flowers look a little like tiny marigold flowers and the fruits stick to clothing. It is usually considered to be a native annual herb.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
