Viola rafinesquii from Vickey South Carolina

Hi Dr. Hill!

Found this in the past couple of days in the backyard near the sandy driveway. It’s very small and I can’t tell if it’s a wildflower or what’s left of one. Found in Richland County. I’ve tried to find anything close on the namethatplant site, but no luck. Can you please identify it? The photos aren’t that great because it’s so small.

Thank you!

Hi Vickey,

this is the open fruit of Viola rafinesquii, the Rafinesque Violet.  It is an early spring annual violet with a stem.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
