Verbena rigida from Mary, SC

Posted on |

What is this close up view of purple flowers that grow in clustered patches usually in pastures and sometimes ditches, blooming beginning of May (early spring)?

Hi Mary,

this is Verbena rigida, sometimes called tuberous vervain, a non-native herb from Brazil and Argentina, South America. It is often found along roadsides in the Spring.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
