Unusual fruit sent in by Roger Miguel

My daughter brought this berry home. It was a tree in her friend’s yard in a residential neighborhood. The skin has a pattern and prickly skin which looks like a pineapple. Unfortunately we do not have a picture of the tree. No one seems to know the name of the berry. The online search didn’t get us results. Charlotte NC Roger

 

Hi Roger,

this is a fruit of the kousa dogwood tree, Cornus kousa, a relative of our native dogwood, but from Asia.  It is very popular in cultivation.  According to Internet sources, it is edible and sweet, though I have not personally tried it.
