Unknown tree from Joanne in Fort Mill

Posted on |

This tree is growing in shady dry wooded area in my backyard. I can’t figure it out.

Hi Joanne,

neither can I. The leaves look a lot like persimmon leaves, Diospyros, but the bark of that looks nothing like the image you sent me. The bark picture looks more like wild black cherry, but the leaves do not.  Please describe the leaf surfaces – do they have felty hairs or any hairs? Please send in more pictures to me here, including more of the tree a bit farther back from it, also the leaf undersides and any young fruits or flowers you can find and I’ll try again.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
