Triodanis perfoliata from Mary, SC

Posted on |

What is this purple flower with small blooms growing on a 12-14 in. stem in dry, sandy soil?

Hi Mary,

this is a rather common roadside flower called “Triodanis perfoliata, the clasping Venus’ looking-glass or clasping bellflower, is a flowering plant belonging to the family Campanulaceae. It is an annual herb native to North and South America, the natural range extending from Canada to Argentina. It is also naturalized in China, Korea and Australia” That information is from Wikipedia. It was once called Specularia perfoliata.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
