A tasty plum from Rebecca SC

Posted on |

Appears to be native tree. Some sort of plum but would like specific. Zone 8 I believe.

Hi Rebecca,

yes, this is certainly a plum, and most likely a cultivar, not a native species.  It does not match our more common wild one, American plum – Prunus americana. All are in the genus Prunus, along with peaches and cherries.  I do not know the cultivated plums, I’m afraid.  This site, however, will give you a lot of information to the various kinds: http://www.michiganplum.org/plum-variety-descriptions/

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
