Snake cotton from Diane, SC

Posted on |

I took this photo on June 30, but as of August 14 the plant is still producing these…catkins(?). Found in full sun along our long country road in the SC fall line area. Who could resist the fuzzy little things? There was only a single plant in the area, but maybe it’s an invasive weed and I’ll soon have more than I counted on.

Hi Diane,

this herb is called cottonweed, or snake cotton, Froelichia floridana.  It is a native plant and should not ever become weedy.  It likes sandy soil and has a wide range.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
