Smooth sumac from Sherry in Upcountry South Carolina

Posted on |

Tall deciduous shrub in full sun area near edge of woods. Red plume like seed heads. If memory serves me correctly, the have large flat leaves in summer. Shrub height around 6-8ft.

Hi Sherry,

this shrub is the common sumac, also called Smooth sumac, Rhus glabra. It is not poisonous like its relative, poison sumac.  There are many sites about it on the Internet.  One of these is:  http://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/dendrology/syllabus/factsheet.cfm?ID=80  Some have even used the seed heads to make a sort of lemonade.  It is native.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
