Silphium compositum from Charlotte in SC

Posted on |

This is the first year I noticed this plant growing under my pines, bordering the shore line of Lake Keowee in Oconee County, SC. This photo was taken mid June.

Hi Charlotte,

your plant is Silphium compositum, the basal leaves. It sends up a tall flower stalk usually 3-6 feet tall eventually with small flowers that look like sunflowers, to which it is related. You can find out more about it here: https://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=SICO5

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
