Setaria italica from Mary, SC

What is this weeping ornamental looking grass with no leaves that grows in dry, sandy soil?

Hi Mary,

this grass is called foxtail millet, Setaria italica, and it is often found in birdseed.  It can also be found in other disturbed areas. It is not native. It actually does have leaves if you follow the stem down a bit.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
