Rubus trivialis from Payton in Georgia

Posted on |

Good afternoon, I discovered this flowering plant on the side of a beach trail on Sullivans Island, SC. I have yet to identify this species, and I am curious what you think this flower could be and some pollination mechanisms it follows.

Thanks,
Payton E.

Hi Payton,

this plant is attracting a lot of attention this spring! It is the common dewberry, Rubus trivialis.  It is a generalist, in that it attracts many kinds of pollinators. The berries are quite tasty.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
