Rubus trivialis from Emily, SC

Posted on |

Vine growing on the ground in several yards in Beaufort county. Just saw it blooming for the first time. Seems to have proliferated in last 2 years. Want to know if poisonous- form of poison ivy? Highly serrated, 3 leaf formation. Doesn’t look like the poison ivy climbing up trees elsewhere in yard.

Hi Emily,

nothing to worry about. These are the flowers of the common dewberry, Rubus trivialis. The nice berries produced later are edible.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven R. Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
