A red magic lily from Lauren in SC

Posted on |

Amazing color, randomly scattered across my property. About 1.5 ft off ground, hummingbirds have been visiting.
What is the name of this beauty?
Thanks so much

Hi Lauren,

this is a garden, non-native, species called Lycoris radiata, the red magic lily, or red spider lily.  It is a type of amaryllis, and it produces flowers long after the leaves are gone, so it seems unexpected.  It may appear native, but someone once planted it there – it does not seem to escape.  The color is wonderful!

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist  SCNPS
