Found it growing out of some indian hawthorne which is planted along the foundation of our office building. We are located in Greenville, South Carolina.
Hi Haley, your plant is one of the sweet peas also called everlasting pea – genus Lathyrus. I must guess that it is Lathyrus hirsutus, an annual, but it could be Lathyrus latifolius – depending on size. Lathyrus latifolius has much larger and showier flowers than L. hirsutus. As far as I know, it is not safe to eat the seeds of this – it is not the edible garden pea, genus Pisum. Perhaps someone else would like to comment on this.
Sincerely, Steve Hill, SCNPS
