Pieris japonica from Anne Doyle in Easley SC

Seen at White Oaks at Furman University

Hi Anne,

this shrub looks to me like Japanese Andromeda, Pieris japonica, after the flowers have fallen.  When the shrub is producing leaves in the early spring, the leaves are often reddish-tinted, but this disappears with age. Cyrilla is somewhat similar in fruit, but the leaves on that plant are more blunt than yours.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Ph.D. Botanist, SCNPS
