Physalis virginiana from DianeP, SC

Posted on |

Hi, Dr. Hill,
This plant was growing along a woodland path in the fall line. It receives dappled sunlight through mostly white oak trees. I photographed it blooming on April 29. I hope it’s a nice native plant; I popped an old tomato cage over it to protect it from deer. Thank you.
Diane

Hi Diane,

this is one of the ground cherries, Physalis virginiana. It is a native species related to tomatoes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
