Passiflora incarnata from Darrell, SC

This plant is in an open river view area on the south/west bank of the Catawba River at the Riverwalk in Rock Hill, SC. 1.7 miles from the trail head. I think the most exotic flower I’ve ever seen. Photos taken 7/3/21

Hi Darrell,

yes, I was astounded the first time I ever saw this flower also. It is the native passionflower, sometimes called maypop, Passiflora incarnata.  It has an extra flower whorl of parts called a corona.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, botanist, SCNPS
