Painted trillium from Joanne in SC

Posted on |

Found while hiking in mountains . I know it is a trillium, and think painted trillium, but berry looks circular.
The second one, is it a mountain hydrsngea?
Thanks

Joanne,

I think you are correct that this is the painted trillium, Trillium undulatum. In our area, it is not found at lower elevations, and so I don’t think it has been found in South Carolina.  Your second image, not seen here, looks like a Joe-Pye weed,  Eupatorium purpureum.  It is not a hydrangea.  However, please post your identification requests separately.  There is no limit to the number of posts, but only one image shows at a time on this site.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
