A mulberry tree from Frank in SC

Posted on |

I obviously planted this tree but can’t remember anything about it.

Hi Frank,

you have a white mulberry there, Morus alba.  In the North it is considered a weed tree, but it is not as common in the South. Its ripe fruits are edible and sweet.  Historically, it was introduced here to initiate a silkworm industry, but for some reason this did not succeed, even though this is one of their favorite foods.

There are many, many websites about this tree.  Here is one that will give you more information: https://gobotany.newenglandwild.org/species/morus/alba/

I hope his helps.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
