Mountain Holly in NY from John in Florida

Was in Adirondacks in upstate New York last week and came across this shrub. What was unique to me was that each single berry had its own stem off the branch. No two’s nor multiple/ bunches of berries. Shrub was next to a path on the side of a hill next to a lake along with pine trees.
Sorry only took 1 photo.
Thanks
John

John,

this is the Mountain holly, Nemopanthus mucronatus, in the Aquifoliaceae, or Holly family.  Most people think of only the genus Ilex in this family, but here is still another one!

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
