Moss-rose from Debbie in SC

Posted on |

Low growing around edge of flower bed – we are new to the area so we are not familiar with the wildflowers here in SC

Hi Debbie,

this is a moss rose, probably the Paraguayan moss rose, Portulaca amilis – it is not a native plant, but it is considered to be a weed spreading in the southeast.  However, it is very similar to the cultivated moss rose, Portulaca grandiflora, but the flowers are larger on the latter.   It is related to common purslane. This website should help:  http://www.southeastgarden.com/portulaca.html

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist,  SCNPS
