Malvaviscus arboreus from Terri, South Carolina

Posted on |

I have had many friends and family ask me about this beautiful red flowering plant but do not know what it is. Can you help?

Hi Terri,

this is called Turk’s Cap, Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii.  It is most common in Texas but can be planted in warm-temperate areas. It is related to both Hibiscus and cotton.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
