Lonicera japonica from Logan in SC

Posted on |

The plant in question is a slender, vine like plant that grows in large patches/swathes in my yard. It has a stem which is reddish in color on the dorsal side and has even pinnate leaves. Someone told me it was poison ivy, but I don’t believe it is. I am also wondering if it is noxious in some way.

Hi Logan,

your vine is Japanese honeysuckle, Lonicera japonica.  It is an invasive and is not at all desirable because it crowds out native plants. I always eliminate it when I see it on my property.

Sorry for the delay, something has failed with the software and I have not been receiving these notices.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
