Longleaf pine sapling from Marge in S. C.

Posted on |

Several of these plants have begun to appear along the bank of the pond behind our house.
It has long,14 inch, needles on a single stem or trunk. No branches like a tree would have. The one in the photo is about 2 1/2 feet tall. I do not know how tall it might get, or if it is evergreen.

Hi Marge,

you have young longleaf pine trees – Pinus palustris.  Many would consider them a very welcome native tree, common in the coastal and some midland areas.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
