A Lenten rose from Gail in SC

Posted on |

Found in overgrown flower garden in the shade in Greenville. Plant’s blooms face the ground, not up toward the sun.

Hi Gail,

this is a  garden favorite, called the hellebore, Helleborus orientalis, also called Lenten Rose.  There are many cultivars.  It is in the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae, and is native to Greece and Turkey but does well in our gardens.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, botanist, SCNPS
