Joe-Pye weed from Debbie in SC

Posted on |

I’m pretty sure we planted this plant, but have no idea what it is. Can you help with its identification? Thanks in advance.

Hi Debbie,

this is a native plant called Joe-Pye weed, probably Eupatorium maculatum.  It has several related species that are more common in our area, such as Eupatorium dubium, and it could, instead, be that one.  Both have the same common name.  They can usually grow to 3 feet or more and it does make a nice garden plant.

Sincerely,

Steven R. Hill, Ph.D., Botanist, SCNPS
