Heliopsis helianthoides from Diane P., SC

Posted on |

Hi, Dr. Hill,
This plant was growing in the Fall Line area in a ditch on a rural road in full sun. I photographed it on August 30. I’m attaching photos of the leaves as well.
Thank you.
Diane

Hi Diane,

this is a plant very similar to Helianthus but the disc is somewhat cone shaped at maturity and not flat like Helianthus.  It is Heliopsis helianthoides, widely scattered in the Carolinas.  Some call it Ox-eye.

Sincerely,

Steven R. Hill, Ph.D., Botanist, SCNPS
