Froelichia floridana from Mary, SC

What is this white spiky flower type grown on a stalk in dry, sandy soil?

Hello again Mary,

your plant is called cottonweed, Froelichia floridana. It is rather widespread in sandy fields and roadsides, and is in the Amaranth family, Amaranthaceae.

Sincerely,
