A Farkelberry from Joanne in SC

Posted on |

I thought it was shrub, but tree too . Small shrubs/trees? clumped together. Leaves Iese than one inch in Length. Reminds me of blueberry, but thicker. I could only come up with box huckleberry. Bark papery. In natural area in back yard where developer left untouched. Understory tree . Haven’t ever seen flowers or berries. Just discovered it was a tree ! Previously thought I had bunch small bushes

Hi Joanne,

my best guess on this is Farkleberry / Sparkleberry, Vaccinium arboreum.  It is a type of blueberry but not really tasty.  It should have white somewhat bell-shaped flowers followed by rather hard berries.  It is our tallest most robust Vaccinium, and a common native.

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
