Euonymus planipes ? fromPatricia, SC.

Posted on |

My daughter found this shrub or small tree near a brook in Winchester, Ma. I have already done lots of research but not been able to ID. The seed pod is square and a beautiful red before the seed pops out. The leaf is about 3″ long and 2″ wide.

Hi Patricia,

this is one of the Euonymus species. I’m not sure of this species, but it seems to match Euonymus planipes, the Chinese spindle tree, but I have not seen this one in person.  The fruit shape seems distinctive.

Sincerely,

Steven Hill, Ph.D., botanist, SCNPS
